English Translation of Bulleh Shah’s Kalam
by Parvez Iqbal Anjum
Bulleha Least I Know Who Am I?
Bulleha least I know who am I ?
Neither am I a believer in mosque
Neither have I trodden the infidel’s path
Neither am I pious in sinful
Nor I Moses in Pharaohs
Bulleha least I know who am I ?
Nothing I have to do with piety or putrescence
Nor am I in pleasure or grief
Neither am I of water nor of earth
Neither am I of fire nor of air
Bulleha least I know who am I ?
Neither I found the secret of religion
Nor was I born of Adam or Eve
Neither I gave me any name
Neither am I of those who squat
Nor I have to do with dwelling
Bulleha least I know who am I ?
From the beginning to the end
I know nothing but me
Nobody else I recognize and found
Nobody else more sage than thee
Bulleha who Spouse is around
Bulleha least I know who am I
By Repeating the Mantra of Ranjha
By repeating the mantra of Ranjha
By repeating the mantra of Ranjha
I myself have gone Ranjha
Call me Dheedo Ranjha None should call me Heer
Ranjha in me and me in Ranjha no alien ever conceived
It is not me it’s He himself disguised in me
He himself console, soothe and see
Whatever shows in me, the same is my person
Whose company have I adopted have become replica of that
Throw away white apparel O maiden and put on sufi’s wear
White apparel attract smears and sufi’s wear is all clear
Bulleh take me to Takhat Hazara
I expect from Sials no booty and cheer
There Is a Cheat in the Folds of My Covering
There is a Cheat in the folds of my covering!
There is a Cheat in the folds of my covering
There is a Cheat in the folds of my covering
Whom to tell my shrieks Oh! Hermit
There is a Cheat in the folds of my covering
If he slipped sans rumpus
There would be uproar in the whole universe
There is a Cheat in the folds of my covering
Muslims are wary of fire and Hindus fear grave
Leaving apart all bickering and brawl
Escaped somebody else that was brave
There is a Cheat in the folds of my covering
Somewhere Ram and at other Mullah
It is the furor old and ancient
There is a Cheat in the folds of my covering
Prayer calls were made at Heavenly throne
These were listened at the exalted Lahore
Shah Inayat has fastened strings
And slyly pulls my wings
There is a Cheat in the folds of my covering
The one who believed has known
Others have collapsed and thrown
All scuffle and tussle came to halt
When Bulleh appeared on the scene
There is a Cheat in the folds of my covering
Wherefore Should I Go to Ka’aba
Wherefore should I go to Ka’aba
Wherefore should I go to Ka’aba
My heart woo for Takhat Hazara
Believers stoop to Ka’aba in reverence
We bow our forehead to Love in reference
You behold not our failures dear
Just perceive our loyalty sheer
I am novice know not swimming
My dear Mentor cruise me to shore
No parallel to you we came across
We searched and screened whole cosmos
Bulleh’s tradition is untoward and unique
He bestows the evildoers and sinners indeed
I may arrive in each mosque and temple
Bulleh tell me my fate and fortune
Ye elbowed away accomplished palmists and pundits
And have called in goofs and stupids
