LEARN THE PUNJABI LANGUAGE
SPRING 2010


We are pleased to announce that Punjabi language classes are being
offered now at Columbia University NY and Hofstra University NY for
the Spring semester of 2010.

Punjab, the land of five rivers, is home to a rich, diverse
civilization that dates back to prehistoric times.  Spoken by over 110
million people comprising Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims in both India and
Pakistan, Punjabi is one of the most widely used and respected
languages of South Asia.

In the beginning class you will be introduced to the Punjabi language
and script (Gurmukhi) while learning about the many facets of Punjabi
culture. Intermediate courses are designed to improve your
conversation skills and advance your knowledge of Punjabi grammar. You
will acquaint yourself with colloquial speech, social etiquette,
traditions, customs, and Punjabi history. Both classes are customized
to students' particular skill levels and learning interests.

After finishing Ph. D program in the Department of Punjabi Language, Punjabi University Patiala, India, Professor Sandeep Singh has joined the faculty of the Department of Languages Resources Center at Columbia University in Aug. 2002. He has established a well-structured three-level of Punjabi Studies program at Columbia. He has introduced the Punjabi language classes for the first time at the Hofstra University, Hempstead-NY (Long Island) in Sep. 2004, and he is still continuously teaching there as well. Prof. Singh has taught Hindi language as well at NYU in the Foreign language studies.

Prof. Singh’s research work on Punjabi literature and theater (The Theoretical study of Balwant Gargi’s plays). He combines a command of classical and colloquial Punjabi and Hindi languages (including a working knowledge of Sanskrit) and manuscripts in archaic forms of Gurmukhi script. Having worked in writing, editing, research, and teaching for various private and public universities as well as broadcast institutions in India and the U.S. for a number of years, he has developed good skills in teaching Punjabi language and Linguistics.
